Jerry, (Wovencroft's real name) is 51 year old and a retiree who hails
from Indiana, USA. Currently, he teaches classes for computers and is a
CISCO Certified Network Administrator, CompTia A+ certified and Cisco Certified
Academy Instructor. It’s safe to say that he is far from relaxing
on the front porch with a glass of lemonade!
Jerry possessed a passion for electronics and communications from a young age, and has spent his life pursuing those things. One of the ways this interest has branched out is in the form of HAM radio. Jerry has had an operator's license for more than 5 years. I couldn’t resist asking him if he had any fun stories to share from his experience with HAM radio. He told me, the one that topped them all was when he was able to contact outer space and talk to the Mir space station about a year before it fell to earth. (Okay, I was impressed!)
The legends of the meaning of these initials for HAM are varied and many, and stretch back to the days of the telegraph. In one story, they stand for Help All Mankind as Amateur Radio Operators are famous for doing exactly that, in the face of disasters. In another story, it stands for the last initials of 3 famous inventors who created the components necessary to bring about the radio. Hertz, for electromagnetic waves, Armstrong, for the resonant oscillator and Marconi for the first transatlantic radio contact.
In actual historical fact, it is the CALL (or identification) of the operators at the first amateur radio station in the Harvard Radio Club. Their names were Hyman, Almay and Murray. ( I kinda liked the “Help All Mankind” one myself. *grin*)
I learned a great deal about the Ham Radio while talking with Jerry. He is very knowledgeable on the subject. Anyone interested in learning more about getting licensed and operating one on your own, go visit a great link: the American Radio Relay League’s homepage at: http://www.arrl.org.
In 1999 Jerry immigrated to CT with a bunch of friends when another chat site they had been visiting closed. He has been here with us ever since. His first position in the Cybertown work force was as a Suburbs Deputy, and he will tell you, that The Suburbs are still his favorite place to hang out in CT. He then went on to become the Block Leader of Sherwood Forest in Legends of the SciFi Colony and then as BL in Legend and Lore Hood of the Inner Realms Colony, and was promoted to Neighborhood Deputy of that same Neighborhood. From there he was the Neighborhood Leader and founder of the Spirituality Neighborhood, before becoming a Colony Deputy in Adventure Colony when it opened.
His current job is Sci-Fi Colony Deputy and is involved in a development phase to put a new face on the colony. Additionally whatever tasks his CL JeetKuneDo tosses his way.
One of the quotes from the original CVN interview Jerry felt strongly enough to leave here is:
“Treat others in virtual life as you would be treated yourself. Think before you post a message on a message board, how will others see what you have written? Help others, especially the “newbies”. We were all there once. Try to understand the rules of Cybertown, they are complex, but understandable. And if you should happen to break one of them and get banned? Do NOT under ANY circumstances for ANY reason come back into the city under another nickname - even one you had created prior to a banning.”
Good Advice!
The Colony Deputy cap is not the only hat that Wovencroft wears here in CT! He also wears one called World Builder *Humor me as I imagine him stuffing the Colony Deputy Cap into his back pocket and buffing off his shiny yellow World Builder construction helmet to hold under his arm, while his eyes light up with excitement.*
When asked why he became a World Builder he responded, “Ohhhh, I am a Pisces. LOL we create. It fascinated me when I saw the worlds in CT when I first joined.”
VRML has had a hold on Wovencroft’s imagination since that time, and has sparked his interest to learn the Virtual Reality Modeling Language. (VRML) You can find several objects in the mall he has made. Or, if you prefer, you can visit the two worlds in the suburbs he created for Cybertown (CT Bank and Trust and The Hobbit Hole) or even take a stroll through the Adventure Colony 3D* chat room which he also created. All of them are marvelous and worth your time to explore!
As we were wrapping up this interview and I imagined Jerry placing his many service hats back up on the top shelf, I asked him who it was in Cybertown that had influenced and inspired him the most. Off the top of his head he listed several people, including Whitedragoness, Seraph and PetulantFaze. “If I had to name ONE person who has influenced me the most and whom I look up to more than any others, it would be Karyll, CL of Inner Realms. Quite a friend there” When it came to VRML inspirations he listed MrPhilip and MotherBates. “But” he said, “There are others as well, too numerous to really mention.”
All in all, I found Wovencroft to be one funny, intelligent and well spoken gentleman. He is a man of many hats, and several CT initials behind his name.
